Araquanid
Type: Water / Bug
Abilities: Water Bubble / Water Absorb
Stats:
HP: 68
Attack: 70
Defense: 92
Special Attack: 50
Special Defense: 132
Speed: 42
Overview:
Araquanid is one of the most underestimated, and deadly Pokemon introduced in Generation 7. Don't let its seemingly low Attack stat fool you, as its new and exclusive ability "Water Bubble" doubles the power of Water type moves, along with Water type STAB bonuses. So one of the best physical water moves in the game Liquidation being used on Araquanid has a base power of 255, one of the highest in the game, due to this, it hits like an absolute truck, and along with having useful resistances to Fighting, Ground, Steel, Water, and Ice type moves, Water Bubble gives it another resistance to Fire type moves and prevents it from being burned! Not to mention it has a ridiculously good Special Defense stat, solid Physical defense stat, and a workable HP stat. Araquanid isn't without its flaws though. It's dreadfully slow, and any attack from it that isn't Liquidation is woefully underpowered. Not to mention it has pesky weaknesses to Flying, Rock, and Electric type moves which are more prevalent than ever in the OU metagame. However if you play to Araquanid's strengths, it can carry your whole team in a pinch.
Set #1: Assault Vest
EVs: 252 HP, 252 Atk, 4 SpD
Nature: Adamant (+ Atk, - SpA)
Item: Assault Vest
Ability: Water Bubble
Moves:
Liquidation
Crunch
Leech Life
Poison Jab
Set Description: Most of the time you're going to be spamming Liquidation, so the rest of the set doesn't matter too much. Assault Vest allows you to become a ridiculous sponge that tanks just about everything, even with no investment and a neutral nature, Assault Vest brings up Araquanid's Special Defense to well over 400. The only move you would want to use other than Liquidation most of the time is Leech Life for recovery and additional (less effective) STAB coverage. Crunch and Poison Jab are coverage fillers that you'll almost never use anyways bar a few odd cases.
Other Options: Unfortunately, Araquanid's Special Attack stat is just too low to utilize Water Bubble's advantage on a move such as Scald, although it could be a nasty little surprise for a physical attack that decides to switch in if you manage to get a burn off on them. It gets Reflect, which most of the time is again situational. Lunge is another Bug move you could use instead of Leech Life, but the recovery is needed (Grassy Terrain support is more than welcomed). Substitute / Sleep Talk / Rest with Liquidation is another option, but it misses out on Assault Vest's benefits.
