Magcargo
Type: Fire / Rock
Abilities: Magma Armor / Flame Body / Weak Armor
Stats:
HP: 60
Attack: 50
Defense: 120
Special Attack: 90
Special Defense: 80
Speed: 30
Overview:
Magcargo is an absolutely cool, yet often forgotten Pokemon that was given a minor chance to shine in the lower tiers thanks to a bunch of buffs given to it this generation. First off, it now has base 60 HP instead of 50, and 90 Special Attack instead of 80, so it's going to be able to tank hits a little bit better, and hit just a little bit harder. Not only that, but the ability "Weak Armor" was buffed, so now whenever Magcargo is hit, it gains two speed stages instead of just one. Combine all of this with access to Shell Smash, a wonderful offensive STAB combination, and you have all the tools you'll need to succeed. However, even with the new speed boost mechanics of its ability and access to Shell Smash, Magcargo is still painfully slow, so you need to be able to make sure you can take a hit before you boost. It also still only has access to Ancient Power as a STAB Rock special move. However, play to its strengths, and you'll roast your enemies.
Set #1: Slow Gain, Worth the Pain (Shell Smash Life Orb)
EVs: 4 HP, 252 SpA, 252 Spe
Nature: Timid (+ Spe, - Atk)
Item: Life Orb
Ability: Weak Armor
Moves:
Shell Smash
Flamethrower / Fire Blast
Earth Power
Ancient Power
Set Description: You're going to get hit before you attack, and that's what you're relying on. Take the hit so you can use Shell Smash. You now have +2 Special Attack, and +3 Speed. That's more than enough to nail quite a few other your enemies. Flamethrower is your STAB of choice, but Fire Blast is also a reliable option. Earth Power and STAB Ancient Power give you that wonderful EdgeQuake coverage but in Special form, and Ancient Power gives you a small chance to boost all of your stats at once, which could mean you win the game.
Set #2: Support Shell
EVs: 252 HP, 4 SpA, 252 SpD
Nature: Calm (+ SpD, - Atk)
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Flame Body
Moves:
Lava Plume
Recover
Stealth Rock
Ancient Power / Toxic
Set Description: A typical support set. Use Lava Plume and take hits using Flame Body to spread burns around, Recover to make use of Magcargo's slightly buffed ability to tank moves, set up rocks when you don't think you can do any more, and the last slot is mostly filler to have a second STAB or to spread additional status around.
Other Options: Magcargo has a plethora of other support options such as Yawn for forcing switches, Refresh for a cleric role, Curse for a niche set up set, Memento to deal with sweepers, Pain Split to take advantage of its somewhat low HP, and dual screens for set up. It also has a few other offensive options such as Explosion and Clear Smog. Most of the time, these sets are a little hard for Magcargo to pull off. It's definitely worth mentioning that Magcargo is an absolute powerhouse under Trick Room due to his low speed.
